UniProtKB description: Involved in a cysteine salvage pathway from S-alkylcysteine. Catalyzes the C-S bond cleavage in N-acetyl-S-benzyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide leading to N-acetyl-S-hydroxy-L-cysteine and benzaldehyde. This pathway is likely important in the catabolism of alkylated cysteine generated by proteolysis of alkylated glutathione formed in the detoxification of a wide range of electrophiles. Has much less efficient activity with N-acetyl-S-methyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide as substrate. Cannot use S-alkylated L-cysteine sulfones and ketone analogs as substrates, demonstrating that the sulfoxide is required for activity.
