UniProtKB description: Degrades the intracellular SAM pools of the host cell and inhibits the host S-adenosylmethionine synthase METK/MAT, thereby preventing methylation of the viral genome (PubMed:34340545, PubMed:33567250, PubMed:5946625). Induces the polymerization of METK into filaments that are enzymatically inactive (PubMed:34340545). Keeping the viral genome in an unmethylated state allows the phage to shift from a lytic infection under normal growth conditions to a transient lysogenic infection under glucose starvation, by blocking its own expression (PubMed:1097737). Does not protect the virus immune against host restriction-modification systems (PubMed:34340545).
