UniProtKB description: The outer membrane component of the MexAB-OprM efflux system that confers multidrug resistance (PubMed:10889211, PubMed:25901994, PubMed:30944318, PubMed:33009415, PubMed:8226684). Functions as the major efflux pump for n-hexane and p-xylene efflux (PubMed:9603892). Has been shown in one study to be involved in the active efflux of the autoinducer N-(3-oxododecanoyl) homoserine lactone, thereby playing an indirect role in quorum-sensing; but has been shown in another study not to be involved in efflux of this autoinducer (PubMed:32715566, PubMed:9973347). Over-expression of the pump increases antibiotic and solvent efflux capacities (PubMed:8540696). Can replace the OprJ outer membrane component of the MexCD-OprJ pump; the antibiotics exported are those exported by the intact MexCD pump, showing that efflux substrate specificity is not conferred by this component (PubMed:9401051). Serves as the outer membrane component for the MexXY efflux system (PubMed:10952562). Implicated in the secretion of the siderophore pyoverdine (PubMed:7968531, PubMed:8226684). OprM is probably involved in the efflux of the siderophore across the outer membrane (PubMed:7968531, PubMed:8226684).
